On April 22, 2019, Stormy Shank celebrated her 100th birthday at Garden Terrace at Overland Park, Kansas.
The facility threw a party in honor of Shank. Her daughter, Debi, attended, along with other residents, associates and Dr. Bruce Hodges, the facility’s medical director. They had cake and cookies and proudly sang “Happy Birthday” as Shank blew her candles out.
Born in Missouri on April 22, 1919, Shank was the daughter of a preacher and a very creative preacher’s wife. Because of this, she had hospitality instilled in her at a young age and has enjoyed throwing parties and attending social gatherings her entire life. She has many friends of all ages who frequently visit her.
Shank married twice. During her first marriage, to Les Shank, she had three children: Carol, Gary and Debi. After Les’ death in 1987, she married the first “love of her life,” Kenny Kresse. Shank has been a widow since Kenny’s death in the early 1990s, but she has continued to enjoy life with her children, five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Shank has a master’s degree in creative dramatics and taught the art of drama in her teaching profession. She has a deep love for the theater and has held tickets for Starlight Theatre in Kansas City for more than 50 years. She filled her life after retirement with adventures such as traveling through Europe, Hawaii and many other parts of America. One of her favorite experiences was singing with a choir at Carnegie Hall.
Shank is a proud Christian and attends Village Presbyterian Church in Prairie Village, Kansas, where she sang in the choir for more than 50 years. She enjoys having people read the Bible and devotional books to her.
When asked what has helped her live such a long and happy life, Shank replied, “I think it’s the chocolate!”
